Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our centers, located throughout the nation, specialize in this testing method. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or elsewhere on the body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requisites.

Drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer this to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation services use hair follicle testing for its extended detection window, often up to 90 days. While highly effective, urine tests remain more precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record of alcohol and drugs over time by enclosing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory consists of four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process verifies the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positive are washed before undergoing confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify results of a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Retrospective data provision: It supplies a timeline of drug use over a period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
