In Glasgow, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether it’s for drug or alcohol detection, our specialty is hair testing, available in all cities nationwide. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Results can pinpoint drugs, alcohol/ETG, or even be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for substance detection. They are preferred by many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. They suit zero-tolerance policies, legal purposes, and probation assessments, offering a detection window of around 90 days. Their accuracy makes them hard to tamper with, unlike timing-sensitive urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair encase biomarkers over time, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can depict up to a three-month timeframe for identifying the presence of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands of hair, roughly the dimensions of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. “Head hair” refers exclusively to scalp hair, whilst “body hair” pertains to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry that the electronic chain of custody system omitted.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment to spot possible drug abuse. Screening is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug presence in most samples, but any positive findings must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples in the Screening stage involve additional hair preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can discover drug use over a 90-day span, whereas urine tests offer much shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can outline drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides a distinct edge over urine tests in Glasgow, KY. By achieving higher levels of detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests have become a preferred choice. While urine tests may suit detecting recent use, hair analysis offers deeper insights into substance history, making it superior in long-term detection.

Employers and legal systems prioritize consistency and less vulnerability to tampering, aspects where hair tests shine. This method ensures a more comprehensive analysis compared to the limited scope of urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Glasgow, KY, hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window for substance use, spanning up to 90 days. This longer time frame gives employers a better overview of an individual's drug history than traditional methods.

This advanced detection ability allows for thorough evaluation, ensuring that hiring decisions or assessments are based on a clear understanding of any past substance use within three months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Glasgow, KY, minimizes the risk of tampering thanks to its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, it's significantly harder to adulterate hair samples, producing genuine and trustworthy results.

The security and integrity offered by this testing method reassure both providers and participants. It ensures that results are reflective of actual substance use without interference from outside factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
