Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and our testing centers are available in every city Nationwide to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or have other bespoke hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been the method of choice for drug tests in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation officers. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug tests is the extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, administered in an observable environment, and are very hard to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use due to the entrapment of biomarkers within its strands. When collected at the scalp, a hair sample can offer an approximate detection window of three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial inclusion of a sample into the lab system. It involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that might not be provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples require secondary confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result credibility.
  • Historical usage data: It provides an overview of drug consumption habits over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be present in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Beaver Dam, KY, hair follicle testing often excels over urine tests due to superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers broader insight into one’s substance use history versus urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
