In Salina, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, we have centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol, or can be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity recently, with many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts preferring it over urine tests. This method is favored by entities with strict no-drug policies, providing a detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. For drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span extending up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-resistant, and it ships with ease.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample weight for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Operational Summary

The primary stages in processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This stage involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not provide.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, confirmation is required for any positive screens to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show a positive indication during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a Screening yields a tentative positive result, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair, where they are present at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair testing is the most intricate method to conduct.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed as needed prior to confirmation. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides insight into patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
