Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Richmond, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we have centers in every city Nationwide that offer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, methods for conducting drug testing have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation programs. A significant benefit is their longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, with collection in a monitored process that's nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an enduring record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use for the majority of cases, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Complex to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug screening approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Richmond, KS, hair follicle testing is emerging as the superior option over traditional urine tests. Its ability to accurately detect substance use over a longer timeframe makes it invaluable for employers and agencies. When compared to urine testing, hair analysis offers improved accuracy and challenges the limitations often associated with other testing methods.

While urine tests are limited to detecting recent drug use, hair testing provides an extended and more comprehensive picture. This method's enhanced ability to reveal substance use patterns provides a more reliable assessment tool for those with zero-tolerance policies. Thus, hair testing stands as the preferred choice for a thorough and dependable analysis.

Extended Detection Window

The remarkable extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing in Richmond, KS, is one of its standout features. This testing method can trace drug use history for up to 90 days, offering employers a broader view of an individual's substance history than other tests.

This extensive timeframe for detection is crucial for employers looking to gain deeper insights into an applicant or employee's behavior over an extended period. As a result, hair testing becomes a powerful tool for informed decision-making in the workplace drug screening process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
