Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Plainville, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area, with testing centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are sought by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The key advantage is the extended detection window for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making it difficult to fake results. However, for recent drug use detection (within the past 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have emerged as a proficient technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol usage. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an extensive insight into drug use, offering approximately a three-month detection window for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately equating to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional parameters, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We recommend utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In situations where scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically addresses scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of drug test determination includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory framework. It involves ensuring that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any missing information not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, results showing positive must be validated to be considered legally credible. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a preliminary positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the original sample to undergo the Extraction process. During this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analyses.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Provisionally positive samples are cleansed prior to the confirmation as necessary. Each segment of the lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Depicts usage history: It unveils a pattern of drug usage over time, unlike merely identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations carry higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual factors like hair color and unique hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
