Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leoti, Kansas. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have centers nationwide that can conduct hair tests. Generally, hair from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Tests detect various substances including drugs and alcohol, along with customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are now favoring hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers maintain zero-tolerance policies by using hair tests, benefitting from the extended detection period of up to 90 days. This is collected under supervision and minimizes the possibility of tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair enables detection of alcohol and drugs for up to a roughly 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to alter, and uncomplicated to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp amasses 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is beneficial to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory's system, including ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in many samples, a positive screen must be affirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

To confirm any positive screening result, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a shorter detection scope.
  • Difficulty to tamper with: Tampering with hair drug tests is notably challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often entail higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
