In Lawrence, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across the nation ready to perform tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair analyses accommodate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored hair follicle analyses. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation offices frequently employ hair tests. The main advantage is a longer drug detection span, up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection process that’s tough to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred method for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol use within an approximately 3-month timeframe. Hair is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is ideal. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result process consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive screens need validation to be suitable for legal purposes. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must be confirmed through additional testing.

For samples testing presumptive positive during Screening, more is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated against both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's challenging to fake results in a hair drug test, therefore enhancing the accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", this test reviews the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lawrence, KS, hair follicle testing outclasses urine testing with its unmatched detection capabilities. Hair tests provide superior accuracy and reliability over traditional urine tests.

While urine tests monitor recent usage, hair tests span a longer period, offering a comprehensive analysis that's essential for enforcing strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Lawrence, KS, hair follicle testing is advantageous due to its extended detection window, identifying drug use over up to 90 days. This provides a thorough overview of an individual's substance use history.

Employers benefit from the extensive historical data that hair follicle tests supply, offering a valuable tool for assessing long-term drug use patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
