In El Dorado, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether it's hair drug or alcohol testing, we're experts in the field with centers nationwide. Most individuals require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been favored more in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it over the traditional urine test. Hair drug tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies and those on probation. Its main advantage is a detection period of up to 90 days, almost impossible to manipulate, although urine tests excel in detecting very recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by locking biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When taken near the scalp, it can extend to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry as needed.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drugs. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a confirmed result is necessary for court admission. Samples that test positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction, where drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva). This makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It shows a drug use pattern over a considerable time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In El Dorado, KS, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in many ways. The longer detection window of hair tests gives an edge in accuracy, capturing drug use history missed by urine tests. This makes it a preferred choice by employers and courts, offering a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use over time.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in El Dorado, KS, offer an extended detection window that can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior. This extended timeline enables employers to gain a thorough understanding of an employee's substance use, allowing for an informed assessment of their long-term behavior regarding drugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
