Process Overview

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample enters the lab's system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening entails an initial rapid check for illicit drugs. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening must undergo further confirmation.
If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a complex process.
Verification of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
