Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

For those in need of hair follicle drug testing in Toledo, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers this complete service. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, we have numerous testing locations across the nation, including several nearby cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or a body hair sample is required. Custom hair tests can analyze substances like alcohol/ETG or other specified drugs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has gained popularity in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now frequently opt for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Their selection is driven by the test's effectiveness for zero-tolerance drug policies, probation requirements, and judicial mandates. Hair follicle drug tests are valued for their 90-day drug use detection period and tamper-reduction, although urine tests remain best for identifying drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a long-term record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result process in the lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial setup of a sample within the laboratory's framework. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information required but not supplied by an electronic custody chain.

During Screening, an initial, rapid test for drugs is administered. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate most drug usage concerns, any positive screen must be validated to be used in court. Samples that are initially positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positivity are washed as necessary ahead of confirmation. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect drug use up to three months, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more credible results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals the pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: It generally takes around 5 to 7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost issue: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair testing over urine in Toledo, IA? The benefits are considerable. Hair follicle testing has a longer detection window and offers superior reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
