Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sioux City, IA. Should you require an alcohol or hair drug test, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers nationwide ready to perform them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug screening methodologies. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over conventional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and individuals under probation as it offers a longer detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, and is hard to falsify. Yet, for drug screenings within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain premier accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection history of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we imply scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process within the lab for determining a drug test outcome involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a specimen into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening requires an initial swift assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 quality standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
