In Persia, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched. We have testing facilities nationwide, in every city, capable of conducting hair tests. Usually, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Lately, the approach to drug screening increasingly incorporates hair follicle testing. Various employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation offices. A significant advantage is its capacity to detect drug usage over an extended period of up to 90 days, with the collection being observed and thus, nearly immune to tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drug presence. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

By collecting a 1.5-inch length comprising around 200 hair strands, roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil, close to the scalp, approximately 100mg of hair is gathered, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional testing, and when conducting tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. Utilize a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen accurately. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, this specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages involved in processing a drug test result within the laboratory environment: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and covers any additional data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase consists of a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be legally defensible in court. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are appropriately washed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is difficult, making the results more dependable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It allows for understanding a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
