Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Nevada, Iowa. For those in need of a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with nationwide facilities ready to conduct these tests. Generally, around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is required. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

The growing trend in drug screening methods is the hair follicle test, often preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation officials favor this method for its extended detection period, which can span up to 90 days. Moreover, hair tests minimize cheating, although urine tests remain precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Considered an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use, hair testing offers a comprehensive history of substance use. The hair strands capture biomarkers in their growing fibers, allowing for the detection of drugs and alcohol over a considerable duration. By collecting samples close to the scalp, hair analysis provides an approximately 3-month window of detection for substances. Hair sample collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields about 100mg—the ideal sample quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" denotes strictly scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory workflow includes four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed in a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the integrity of the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data not captured by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance use. While cost-effective for omitting drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for testing. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid, underscoring the complexities of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples may be washed as necessary. The entire lab protocol—from Accessioning to Confirmation—adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Resistance to adulteration: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: Hair testing can reveal drug usage patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Potential result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nevada, IA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection range and reliability. Hair tests offer a broader window, catching substance use more effectively.

The precision of hair testing ensures nearly foolproof results, making it an outstanding choice against traditional urine tests that fall short in long-term detection capabilities.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Nevada, IA, benefit from hair follicle testing with a longer detection window, capturing drug use over 90 days. This offers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

The extended window ensures that employers can thoroughly assess an applicant or employee's background, supporting informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Nevada, IA relies on hair follicle tests for tamper-resistant results, significantly reducing sample adulteration risks. This method guarantees reliable, uncontestable results.

The test's inherent design deters interference, offering peace of mind that results reflect true substance use history rather than being manipulated.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
