Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leon, Iowa. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair sampling, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically sufficient. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Its major advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, almost impossible to tamper with. For recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by encasing biomarkers within its growing strands. When obtained close to the scalp, hair offers about a three-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is effortless to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We recommend utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the same weight of body hair can be used. By head hair, we imply only scalp hair; body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing steps for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first entered into the lab system. This step ensures the sample is securely sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for drug presence. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most cases, any positive screen must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration level, making hair drug testing more challenging than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing).

Confirmation of any positive screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positive findings are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which are limited to shorter durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is enhanced by the difficulty in altering results.
  • Chronological usage data: It shows drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing often incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
