Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing for drugs in Lake View, Iowa. Should a hair test for drug or alcohol be necessary, Accredited Drug Testing shines in hair analysis, with locations nationwide ready to conduct tests. Standard requirements include 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, suitable for detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Various courts, employers, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals utilize hair tests mainly due to their extended detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, and the difficulty to falsify results. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests maintain higher precision.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance exposure. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol presence over a period of up to 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for accuracy. If head hair isn't accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any necessary data entry absent from electronic custody systems.

Screening provides an initial assessment for unauthorized substance use. Although a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is processed from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair with significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug examinations.

The confirmation of a positive result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a minimal detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It depicts a timeline of drug use over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and personal variance in hair growth might impact the concentration of drug markers in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", only the hair strand is analyzed, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
