In Hiawatha, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're required to undergo a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and provide services in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and those supervising individuals on probation. The primary advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window, which can track drug use up to 90 days and is conducted under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. For more recent drug use within five days, though, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When hair samples are taken from near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample that consists of approximately 200 hairs (the equivalent thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. An amount of 150mg is preferable for EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels. Use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" refers only to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves checking that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method to check for drug presence. It is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most cases, but any positive results from screening need confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate a confirmation step.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or saliva testing, making hair drug testing particularly complex.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptively positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use over months rather than short-term usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
