Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fremont, Iowa. For those in need of a drug or alcohol analysis via hair sample, we are experts in the field. Our testing centers span all cities across the nation for convenient hair testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically sufficient. We offer customizable hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analysis. This method is preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers commonly opt for hair testing. The main advantage of this method is its extended detectability period of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate within a 5-day use period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains markers of alcohol and drugs in its growing fibers, offering a historical view of substance use. When collected near the head, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period of about 90 days. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the head yields about 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial and underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of entering a sample into the lab system. It involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning it a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any manual data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary review for substance abuse. As a cost-effective measure, Screening rules out drug use for most samples, but any positive findings need confirmation for legal proceedings. Presumptive positive screenings must undergo a secondary verification.

In cases where the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair testing a challenging procedure.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to adulterate: Cheating a hair test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Results may vary: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Keep in mind: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fremont, IA: Hair testing stands out against urine tests by offering superior detection capabilities and improved reliability. Unlike traditional methods, hair tests can uncover long-term drug use, up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter timeframe.

Hair follicle testing is preferred for its comprehensive insight into substance use, offering employers a better tool to enforce zero-tolerance policies. These tests are harder to manipulate, providing more reliable and accurate results compared to urine analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Fremont, IA: Hair follicle testing enables drug detection for up to 90 days, offering a broad spectrum view of someone's drug use history. This extended timeframe allows employers to assess patterns of drug use, rather than isolated incidents, benefiting decision-making processes.

This method grants a longer detection window, making it a valuable tool for employers needing to understand substance habits over a more extended period. It encapsulates a comprehensive look at an applicant or employee's past drug behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
