Located in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol tests through hair samples, we have facilities nationwide. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for its effectiveness. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine methods. These tests are essential for strict drug policies and probation monitoring due to their extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and resistance to tampering. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately akin to the size of a #2 pencil) sourced closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferable quantity for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This task includes confirming that the sample was sealed and conveyed correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry that is not submitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening checks for initial signs of drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal scenarios. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples yielding presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can establish a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically impose a higher cost compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the hair follicle itself underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to urine testing in Fort Dodge, IA? Hair tests offer extended detection and higher accuracy, capturing drug use far more comprehensively. Unlike urine tests, which might overlook prior substance consumption, hair tests provide reliability and precision that employers can trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
