Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug screening via hair follicle analysis in Adair, Iowa. If in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is required, although body hair may be an option. This testing can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have been more widely adopted for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine samples. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and those on probation often rely on this method. The key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, achieved through monitored collection, minimizing the chances of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests still lead in detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial incorporation into a lab’s system. This stage verifies proper sample sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary quick analysis for drug abuse. While this phase is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require extra confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis more challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug testing is challenging to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical evidence: It provides usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is regarded as superior to traditional urine testing in Adair, IA. Owing to their superior detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests are preferred. They offer an extended detection window and are less susceptible to tampering compared to urine tests. The results effectively reveal an individual's drug history over a longer period, providing a more comprehensive view of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One standout feature of hair follicle testing in Adair, IA, is its extended detection window, which can cover up to 90 days. This empowers employers with a broader perspective on a candidate or employee's substance use history. Unlike other methods, hair testing effectively shows a detailed timeline of potential drug intake, offering reliable insights into behavioral patterns concerning substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

When preventing sample tampering, hair follicle tests in Adair, IA, stand unmatched. These tests are designed to be tamper-resistant, reducing risks of adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
