In Clayton, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this testing modality, hosting centers across numerous cities nationwide capable of conducting such analyses. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests are adept at detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or may be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method for drug screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation predominantly use hair tests. This type of testing offers an extended detection window, up to 90 days, and is administered in a supervised manner, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urinalysis remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term account of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair in growth. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use history for up to three months. The procedure to collect hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, extra tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is preferred. We suggest weighing specimens using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In this context, head hair specifies scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial processing in the lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any missing information not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial quick examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for rejecting drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at noticeably lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening uniquely challenging to execute.

To confirm a positive screen, methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace substance use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter timeline of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify results: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can reflect a usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
