Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Zion, Illinois. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair sampling, with testing sites accessible nationwide, including Zion. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is ideal, although body hair may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances through specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored over other testing methods. Numerous employers, judicial courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair exams over traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals benefit from this method. Hair tests provide a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and are collected under supervision, minimizing chances of tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term patterns of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, has low susceptibility to tampering, and is easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands nearest to the scalp, roughly the size of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg of hair, which is the prime sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG extras, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair specifically, while "body hair" refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a specimen into a lab’s system, ensuring that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any remaining data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial concise check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug presence in the majority of cases, a positive finding in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for the Confirmation of any positive Screening result. All presumptive positives are cleansed before the confirmation process as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrent: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It supplies a record of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the sub-scalp follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Zion, IL, choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing offers several benefits. Detection accuracy is significantly higher in hair tests. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are less influenced by fluctuations in hydration levels or recent abstinence, presenting a true reflection of drug use history. The results reflect habitual patterns, providing a comprehensive insight that urine tests might miss.

Traditional urine tests often face issues with tampering and sample adulteration. In contrast, hair follicle tests provide a nearly tamper-proof method, significantly reducing the risk of manipulation. This reliability ensures that the results are dependable, making hair testing the preferred option for employers and institutions aiming for precise outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing in Zion, IL is its extended detection window. While urine tests can only detect recent use, typically within days, hair follicle tests trace substance use up to 90 days prior. This broader detection period allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual's drug usage patterns over time, aiding in making informed employment decisions.

For employers seeking a detailed substance history of a potential or current employee, hair follicle testing provides unmatched visibility. It enables organizations to uphold their drug-free policies more effectively by offering a more comprehensive view of an individual's habits, ensuring a healthier and safer working environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing stands out in Zion, IL for its tamper-resistant qualities, offering an unparalleled level of assurance in test results. The method substantially reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, thus delivering results that are both reliable and credible. This feature is crucial for employers and institutions that require unassailable evidence of compliance with drug-free mandates.

Unlike urine tests, which can be subject to various manipulation tactics, hair tests provide a method of testing that very little can disrupt. The integrity of the sample is maintained from collection to analysis, ensuring that the results reflect an accurate picture of drug use without the risk of tampering, thus reinforcing confidence in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
