Offering thorough hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing serves Vernon Hills, Illinois. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our centers are well-equipped for these and located nationwide. Typically, hair tests necessitate 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas. These tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over urine tests. Enforced in zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation, hair tests detect drug use over extended periods—up to 90 days—and are near tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain the standard for recent (within 5 days) drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use. Hair cut close to the scalp can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations surpassing 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We advocate for measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory process of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial handling into a laboratory’s systems, ensuring it was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift evaluation for substance abuse. While it's a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most specimens, any positive result here necessitates confirmation to be deemed valid in legal settings. Samples presumed positive in Screening need an extra confirmation.

If Screening deems a sample presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine, saliva) thus making hair analysis one of the most challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive result from screening. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests reveal drug use over a 90-day period, unlike shorter detection windows as seen with urine tests.
  • Reduced likelihood of manipulation: Hair testing is difficult to deceive, thus, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of substance use instead of just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Discovery of recent use is not immediate: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and unique differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and does not involve the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Vernon Hills, IL, hair follicle tests outperform traditional urine tests. With superior detection accuracy and reliable results, hair tests offer a more comprehensive assessment. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
