Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Streator, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we stand out in hair testing, with centers in all cities across the nation that can conduct the necessary tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or other body areas is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing modalities.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method in drug testing. A variety of entities such as employers, courts, and professionals dealing with substance abuse prefer hair over urine tests. This test is favored by employers with zero-drug tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its primary advantage: a longer detection window, up to 90 days, gathered through an observed collection, making it nearly immune to tampering. However, urine tests still hold superiority when detecting drug use within the recent 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be acceptable in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, rendering the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a longer timeline, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other forms of drug testing.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Streator, IL, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests due to its comprehensive substance detection capabilities. Whereas urine tests primarily capture recent drug use, hair tests boast an extensive detection window, offering a detailed history of use. Such broad analysis is invaluable for employers seeking a full picture of their workforce's drug habits

The unmatched accuracy and reliability of hair testing make it a favored choice among organizations with stringent drug policies. Unlike urine tests, which can miss infrequent substance usage, hair tests efficiently uncover patterns over an extended period, rendering them a robust tool for drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Streator, IL, offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive period provides employers with invaluable insights into an individual's substance habits. With detailed reports, organizations can assess whether their workforce aligns with a committed drug-free environment, aiding in informed hiring decisions.

The ability to detect a broader drug timeline makes hair testing a powerful tool for employers evaluating potential hires. Knowing an applicant's substance history over an extended period aids in safeguarding workplace safety. This long detection duration proves essential in identifying reliable, drug-free candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
