Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sparta, Illinois. Should you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with facilities available across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your crown or body is used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or carry out other tailored hair testing.

Lately, drug testing methodologies have shifted towards hair follicle assessments. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those supervising probations particularly favor hair follicle tests. The main advantage lies in its extended detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days ago, with a supervised collection process almost immune to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urinalysis remains the standard.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair can capture a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. A specimen collected near the scalp offers a detection timeline of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to deliver for analysis.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands, similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil, ensures 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For additional testing such as EtG or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable portion of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair used here pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing drug test outcomes involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into the lab system. It entails confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the specimen, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result necessitates confirmation to be recognized in a legal setting. Samples indicating presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

In the Screening phase, if a sample is deemed presumptive positive, additional hair from the original specimen is set aside for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), reinforcing hair drug screening as the most complex method to perform.

To confirm a positive Screening outcome, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical overview: It provides insights into drug use over time rather than capturing only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5 to 7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs a higher cost than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
