Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Rushville, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers available nationwide, equipped for this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. These tests accurately detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence recently as a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over urine analyses. This method proves essential for organizations with strict drug policies, court orders, or probation requirements, offering extended detection up to 90 days and mitigating cheating risks, though urine remains best for recent usage verification.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of emerging hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main components in processing drug test results in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to identify substances of abuse. Although screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a screen indicating a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples presumptively positive in Screening do need further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptively positive result in the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Confirmation for any screen-positive result is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if needed. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screens can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests allow a shorter period of detection.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug screens are difficult to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It supplies a record of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
