In Rochelle, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing is skilled in hair testing with centers nationwide. Testing typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary cases employ hair tests. Hair follicle testing offers a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a highly effective method for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture and hold biomarkers within their fibers, offering a historical record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, with minimal chances for tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of about 1.5 inches in length, consisting of nearly 200 strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional compounds, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four critical procedures in the laboratory analysis of drug testing results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of integrating a sample into a lab's system for the first time. This step includes ensuring that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not already included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most complex method to execute.

To confirm any positive results, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO/IEC 17025 certification requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical data: Hair tests can reveal patterns of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
