Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ogden, Illinois. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair testing is supported by testing facilities in cities all across the nation that are equipped to conduct a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, drug testing strategies increasingly encompass hair follicle drug screening. Many businesses, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict zero-tolerance policies on substance use, legal venues, and probation programs. Its key advantage is its prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process resistant to cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of about up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, comparable body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of lab-testing a drug specimen primarily involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab's infrastructure. This includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the specimen, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for potential drug use. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive Screening requires verification to be valid in a legal setting. All samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is quite challenging to falsify results in a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
