Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Newton, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this area and have facilities nationwide to conduct the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers various tailored testing options.

The methodology for drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle test in recent years. It's preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to traditional urine exams. Hair testing is suited for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial settings, and individuals on probation. Its major advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, which reaches up to 90 days, ensuring reliability and minimizing the chance of manipulation. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. With samples taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp renders 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we reference head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning tackles the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This step encompasses confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid screening for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be viable in legal settings. Samples that are presumptive positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening returns a presumptive positive sample, additional hair is separated from the main specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening more complex to execute.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: These tests can showcase a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
