Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Murphysboro, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol exam, we specialize in hair testing and operate testing facilities in every city across the nation that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body suffices. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests over traditional urine examinations. Employers, courts, and probationers adhere to hair follicle drug tests due to their zero-tolerance drug policies. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized today as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands during growth. When sourced near the scalp, hair testing can reveal drug and alcohol use over approximately 90 days. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil’s diameter) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the hair specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The four core processes in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial registration of a specimen into a laboratory’s workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective measure to eliminate potential drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require additional confirmation testing.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in other methods like urine or saliva, hence making hair drug screening one of the more challenging procedures.

Confirmation for any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Assesses usage patterns: It provides a record of drug use tendencies, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" frequently used refers to examining the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
