Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs in Morris, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to for hair testing, with locations available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, with both head and body hair eligible. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has been increasingly favored for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial settings, and probation monitoring. Their main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, making them nearly infallible, though urine tests remain superior for recent (5-day) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand, offering a history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into the lab system, confirming correct sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. While cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage involves removing drugs from the hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples marked as presumptive positive are washed pre-confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection time of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use, reflecting patterns rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Morris, IL
Hair follicle tests offer an encompassing perspective on an individual’s drug use history compared to traditional urine tests. The expanded detection window up to 90 days makes it hard to mask drug use, unlike urine tests which might only show recent activity, ensuring better accuracy and reliability in Morris, IL.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Morris, IL
The hair follicle testing method uniquely enables drug detection for as long as 90 days past drug use, providing a complete history and a broader view of an individual's substance usage over time. This extended timeframe is particularly advantageous for employers in Morris, IL, seeking comprehensive substance profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
