In Mendota, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, rely on Accredited Drug Testing. With facilities in all cities across the nation, our expertise in hair testing ensures accurate results. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often favor it over urine tests. This method is ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation conditions. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and are nearly cheat-proof, unlike urine tests, which remain the benchmark for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for substances. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective technique to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in a legal setting. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result in screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and upholds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent behavior.

Disadvantages:

  • Ignores recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concentrates on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and traditional urine testing in Mendota, IL, hair testing comes out superior. Its accuracy and reliability surpass urine testing. Hair can detect traces over a much longer period, providing a fuller picture of substances used. Unlike urine tests, hair screening eliminates the concern of sample tampering, offering peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

In Mendota, IL, one of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Being able to uncover drug use within a 90-day span, it offers employers comprehensive insights into a person's history. This prolonged detection gives a more complete understanding, aiding in making informed decisions regarding employment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The threat of sample adulteration is mitigated significantly with hair follicle testing in Mendota, IL. Hair tests are inherently tamper-resistant, rendering them reliable for those seeking a precise drug test. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
