At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Kewanee, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over traditional methods. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts choose hair testing over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation favor hair follicle tests due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days, a monitored collection process, and high resistance to tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can deliver up to a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, though tampering with hair samples is moderately challenging, and the shipping process is uncomplicated.

By taking a 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp, you acquire 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For assessments involving EtG, additional parameters, and/or over 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Our reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab system. This phase ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result must be authenticated for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening requisites a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Every presumptive positive specimen undergoes washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that provide shorter detection timelines.
  • Challenge to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Presents historical insight: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
