Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing provides you with reliable options, with testing facilities accessible across the nation. For a hair sample, generally 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be used. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug analysis is increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, employers, the courts, and probation cases benefit from hair tests. The key advantage is an extended detection window—up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, minimizing cheating opportunities. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substances such as alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair offers nearly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, equates to around 100mg of hair, which is the prime quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's wise to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. It involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and undertaking any additional data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most cases, but a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples suggesting positivity during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample indicates probable positivity in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more complex methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples tentatively testing positive undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug consumption, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Hoffman Estates, IL pivots on superior detection accuracy and dependability. Hair testing extends a comprehensive window of detection, identifying historical substance use more effectively than the brief timeframe captured by urine tests, thus providing a clearer overview of a person’s drug usage.

Hair testing shines with a longer detection period. In contrast to urine tests, hair follicle testing offers an unparalleled precision by revealing substance use patterns, increasing reliability in situations demanding stringent screening.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Hoffman Estates, IL offers clear benefits. Hair follicle testing wins with the ability to track substance use up to 90 days prior. This extended window provides a detailed account of one's potential history with drugs, benefiting employers looking to fully assess an applicant or employee’s alcohol and drug past.

Employers gain a holistic view of an individual’s substance use with the 90-day detection window offered by hair tests. Providing an expansive window means older substance use cannot go unnoticed, assisting in more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Hoffman Estates, IL proves significant. Hair follicle tests minimize adulteration risk, enhancing the integrity and reliability of results. Compared to other methods, they’re inherently more resistant to tampering or manipulation due to their collection and testing procedures, thus ensuring credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
