Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Grayslake, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. With locations across the nation, we can facilitate a hair test effortlessly. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body are preferred. Hair samples offer insights into drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Lately, there's been a trend towards using hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. More employers, legal entities, and substance counselors opt for hair drug evaluations over standard urine analyses. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals trust these tests. The main advantage of hair testing is in its extended detection window—often up to 90 days—ensuring a high level of accuracy in supervised settings, while cheating is nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition for its efficacy in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair may indicate substance use over three months. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. We suggest weighing it using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, equivalent body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically references scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with integrating a sample into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, issuing a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any data entry absent in an electronic system.

Screening serves as an initial check for substance abuse. Though it’s an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation for court validity. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For presumptive positive cases, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction, where substances are isolated at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: It identifies drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection limits.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The integrity of hair drug tests reduces falsification risks.
  • Chronicles usage: Offers a drug usage pattern across time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent detection: Drugs require 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth traits can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
