Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairview Heights, Illinois. If hair drug or alcohol testing is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched with testing centers available across all cities Nationwide. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is typically required. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle drug tests are invaluable for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probationers. The main advantage lies in a prolonged detection window up to 90 days, ensured by directly supervised sample collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the best for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair records a history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate 3-month timeframe to detect alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, making tampering challenging, and samples can be easily mailed.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands, roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg—ideal for preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. The specimen's weight should be verified using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair should be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is first introduced into the lab's system, ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment are intact, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any non-electronic data entry.

Screening quickly checks for common drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair testing one of the most intricate methods.

Confirmation of any positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Detects drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating is extremely difficult, yielding more accurate results.
  • Historical insights: Offers a timeline of drug use, rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Generally costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over urine testing in Fairview Heights, IL? Hair testing offers notable benefits over traditional urine tests. Hair vs. Urine:

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
