Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Elmwood Park, IL. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we offer locations nationwide capable of conducting these analyses. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Our tests can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are now opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, in legal situations, and by probation officers. Hair follicle tests offer a primary benefit of extended drug detection, up to 90 days, with high security against tampering. However, urine tests remain more exact for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent instrument in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands embed biomarkers within the matrix of the growing hair, offering a comprehensive history. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol availability for up to roughly 90 days. Hair is effortless to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Referencing head hair specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas body hair embodies all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug testing involves four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially processing a sample into a lab system. This phase confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplemental data entry not accomplished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial cursory evaluation for the presence of abuse substances. While Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a confirmed positive result is required for legal acceptance. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation test.

Should a sample appear potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive detection during Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as necessary. Each laboratory stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and complies with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug activity over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: There is generally a 5-7 day period required for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment investigates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Elmwood Park, IL

Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. With a longer detection window, they provide reliable, long-term substance abuse insights. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is harder to manipulate, maintaining integrity and trustworthiness in results. This method is increasingly popular for its demonstrated reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended detection window, allowing drugs to be detected up to 90 days after use. This gives employers an insightful view of an individual's long-term substance use history, beyond the typical period for urine tests. This prolonged detection period provides a comprehensive understanding of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
