Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Eldorado, Illinois. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing. Nationwide centers, including those in all major cities, offer these tests. Typically, the presence of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored assessments.

Hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity as a method of testing for drugs. Increasingly, employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals demand hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies and are used by courts and probation officers. Their main advantages include a 90-day drug detection period, an observed collection method, and resistance to tampering. However, for drug use detection within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When hair is taken from close to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug presence within a roughly 3-month timeframe. This type of hair is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary screenings, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result undergoes four essential steps in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step checks proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. It serves as an economical method to eliminate drug use suspicion in most cases. However, a positive result in Screening requires further verification for legal acceptance. Any tentatively positive samples in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair with lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of any Screening-positive result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides drug use patterns over a prolonged duration rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
