Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Effingham, Illinois. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailor-made hair testing alternatives.

Recently, the approach to drug testing more often includes hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection timeframe for drug use—up to 90 days—following an observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. However, within the initial 5-day period of use detection, urine tests are still deemed most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can present a comprehensive history of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a three-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be accessed, an equivalent body hair sample may be taken. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While Screening presents a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, making results more dependable.
  • Supplies historical data: It can indicate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

In Effingham, IL, the reasons why hair follicle testing often surpasses urine testing stem from its unparalleled efficacy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
