Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Carrollton, Illinois. Whether you're in need of drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing ensures accurate services, with centers available in all cities Nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for testing. Hair exams can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services favor hair follicle tests for their long detection window, up to 90 days, and their resilience against tampering, although urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term record by locking biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, it can show drug and alcohol use over roughly a 3-month period. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it's relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs close to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for thorough screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. The sample should ideally be measured on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. By referring to head hair, we are specifically addressing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial handling of a specimen within a lab’s system. This process checks that the specimen is properly sealed and shipped, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra paperwork absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, a preliminary test checks for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be verified to stand in legal situations. Each sample that indicates presumptive positivity in Screening requires a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample suggests positivity during Screening, additional hair from the collected sample is designated for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging process.

Use of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is applied to confirm any positive Screening. Positive samples go through a washing process prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect more recent usage.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of drug use instead of only current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Cost: They tend to be more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Concentrations of drug metabolites can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
