Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bloomingdale, Illinois. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol examinations, we provide services across Nationwide centers, including all cities. Hair length required is 1.5 to 2 inches at the crown but can involve other body hair. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

The trend for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair tests appeal to those enforcing zero-tolerance policies and monitoring probation. Their key advantage is a longer detection scope of up to 90 days, using an observed collection, reducing chances of manipulation. Urine tests still excel in detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for nearly a three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG evaluations, supplements, and/or examinations surpassing 10 analytes, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s balance. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's framework. It involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an anonymized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening embodies the preliminary, rapid assessment for abused substances. Despite Screening being an economical method to exclude drug presence in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening do require a corroborative analysis.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. During this phase, substances are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening finding is executed through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for as much as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It provides insight into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative diagnostic methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bloomingdale, IL, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in several ways. Its superior detection covers up to 90 days, offering an extended view of substance history. Urine tests fall short, detecting recent usage only, while hair tests provide a comprehensive analysis.

Employers benefit from the enhanced accuracy and reliability of hair tests, reducing potential for cheating. The results offer assurance that individuals maintain compliance over an extended period.

Extended Detection Window

The detection window is a critical advantage of hair testing in Bloomingdale, IL. With the ability to identify substance usage up to 90 days prior, hair follicle tests give a detailed history of an individual's drug habits.

This prolonged detection period allows employers to review an applicant's or employee’s substance use thoroughly, giving insight into their long-term habits rather than just recent usage. This supports better decision-making in hiring or ongoing assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bloomingdale, IL, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, providing indisputable results that withstand scrutiny.

The robustness of hair testing means that regardless of attempts to alter results, the integrity of the sample and outcomes remain intact. This reliability brings confidence to employers enforcing drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
