Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Aledo, Illinois. Our expertise lies in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. The requirement is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, or body hair may be used. Hair testing can analyze for various substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug screenings. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, executed in a monitored collection process, making it highly tamper-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair presents a comprehensive historical record of drug and alcohol usage. Collecting hair close to the scalp can reveal substance use over a period of up to three months. It is relatively straightforward to collect, not easily altered, and easy to transport.

To achieve an optimal screening and confirmation sample, acquire a 1.5-inch piece with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, equating to approximately 100mg. For EtG, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result process within the laboratory encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples first enter the laboratory’s system, ensuring that they are properly sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any required data not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial examination for drugs of abuse. This cost-efficient method effectively rules out drug usage in most samples, though any positive results require confirmation for legal credibility. Samples with presumptive positive results must undergo secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples in the Screening phase have more hair extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicating a presumptive positive are washed as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can show drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Due to the difficulty in falsifying hair drug tests, results are more reliable.
  • Shows historical usage patterns: It reveals drug use trends over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drug detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand and does not involve the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing in several ways in Aledo, IL. It offers a broader detection period and is less susceptible to being falsified, providing a more reliable drug history analysis.

The tests' accuracy in uncovering long-term substance use makes hair testing a superior alternative to urine tests, giving employers evidence of ongoing drug habits rather than isolated incidents.

Extended Detection Window

In Aledo, IL, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing uncovers drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This reveals a thorough insight into an individual's substance habits.

Employers benefit by obtaining a complete view of an applicant or employee's substance use history, which assists in informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing methods used in Aledo, IL minimize the risk of sample tampering. The collected hair samples are hard to adulterate, ensuring upstanding results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
