Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Vidalia, Georgia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol, ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted for substance screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies and probationary programs find it beneficial. The main advantage is its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, conducted with direct observation, making it nearly impossible to alter. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term timeline of alcohol and assorted drug use by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from just 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg, the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It’s preferable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. By ‘head hair’, we specify scalp hair. ‘Body hair’ covers all other varieties (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data input absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Though cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For presumptive positives during Screening, more hair from the original specimen is readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique.

Confirmations of any positive screens are achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are effective for up to 90 days of drug use detection, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, adding to result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally come at a higher cost than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
