In Rock Spring, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty is hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch sample of hair from the head or body suffices for the majority of cases. Hair tests provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more prominent method for drug screening in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly demand hair drug tests over traditional urine methods. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation favor hair follicle tests. They offer the major advantage of detecting drug usage over a longer duration, usually up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection time frame of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and corroboration. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in the laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s setup. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is separated from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably hard to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more credible results.
  • Provides chronological data: It can illustrate drug use tendencies over a span of time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The Advantages of Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Testing in Rock Spring, GA

Hair follicle tests offer significantly better detection accuracy than traditional urine tests. These tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, greatly surpassing the span of urine tests. They're also less vulnerable to adulteration, making them a trustworthy method for employers, legal bodies, and individuals subjected to stringent testing requirements.

By selecting hair testing, employers can better enforce their drug-free policies, minimizing the potential risks of substance use in the workplace. Hair tests provide not only extended detection but also accurate and reliable assessment of a person's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
