In Mableton, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing, our specialty in hair testing is supported by centers Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically needed. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Increasingly common in recent years, hair follicle drug testing is being adopted over standard urine tests by many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and is valuable for individuals on probation. Offering a detection window up to 90 days, the hair test is collected under supervision and is highly tamper-proof. However, the urine test remains the most accurate for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches of 200 hair strands (about pencil-sized) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for ruling out usage in most samples, any positive outcome from Screening requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug testing is very hard to deceive, ensuring accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals long-term drug use patterns, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing forms.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
