Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lithonia, Georgia. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and operates testing sites in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been part of drug screening protocols. Many employers, legal bodies, and substance use specialists now prefer a hair drug test over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs commonly utilize these tests. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection timeframe for drug use, approximately 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are challenging to tamper with, despite urine tests being more accurate for recent usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for tests involving screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to every other kind of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's database. This step comprises ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to a preliminary fast assessment of drug presence. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening result must be validated to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is marked presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral saliva), which illustrates why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if required. The full lab progression from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variabilities: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
