Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Jonesboro, Georgia. If seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in hair testing, accessible through our centers across all cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is needed, or body hair can be used. Hair assessments can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over basic urine exams. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle tests. Key advantages include a prolonged detection window of roughly 90 days, observed collection processes, and difficulty to falsify, yet for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding indicators in the strands as they develop. When sampling is done near the scalp, it offers an approximately 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is uncomplicated, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When "head hair" is mentioned, it specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process checks the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any needed data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug involvement for most samples, positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screenings.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed if needed prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screen tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating in hair drug testing is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It identifies drug use trends over a duration, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect use shortly after intake: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
