Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Jefferson, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, featuring centers in cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for the test. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance-abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is utilized by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs. The chief advantage of this test is its extensive drug-use detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of substance use by entrapping biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to nearly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This means confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent electronic custody system involvement.

Screening is a swift preliminary check for drug presence. While cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples presumptively positive through Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than in urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening notably complex.

Confirmation of positive screens is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • High resistance to tampering: It's very hard to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays usage trends: Offers a usage pattern over time, not just present use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Variations such as hair color and personal growth rates can impact metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests," the assessment targets the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
