In Homer, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair-based testing, with facilities located nationwide for your convenience. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly standard in drug screening methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts frequently prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the court system, and for those on probation. Key advantages of hair follicle tests include a longer detection window—up to 90 days—an observed collection procedure, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to a 90-day period. Hair sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening is an initial rapid test for illegal drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive screens need validation to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample receives a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can determine drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window of detection.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are incredibly hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Homer, GA, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests through its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can trace drug consumption back up to 90 days, a feat unmatched by urine tests. Additionally, hair follicle tests minimize the risk of tampering due to their observed collection process. Choosing hair testing ensures that you obtain reliable data about extended drug use history, essential for making informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Homer, GA, is its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug usage stretches going back up to 90 days, this method offers employers invaluable insights into a person's substance-use history. This extended window allows for a comprehensive view of an individual's behavior, providing a thorough overview for making informed employment or other decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Homer, GA, offers a tamper-resistant solution for drug detection. This method significantly reduces the potential of sample adulteration, ensuring that the results are both reliable and unquestionable. The test's observed collection process works as a powerful deterrent against attempts to alter or skew test outcomes, continually providing trustworthy data for those who need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
