Accredited Drug Testing conducts comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Donalsonville, Georgia. If you're in need of hair or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair testing with facilities available across the country that can execute these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary, with hair tests being customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Lately, utilizing hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug testing. Offered as an alternative to urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, these tests fit zero-tolerance policies and the stipulations for individuals on probation. Hair follicle testing is favored for its lengthy detection period, often up to 90 days, secure collection process, and reduced potential for cheating, though urine tests remain best for very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Head hair pertains to scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in a lab for drug test assessment includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was securely sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceedingly tough to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not merely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine testing, particularly in Donalsonville, GA where accuracy is paramount.
The ability of hair tests to detect a broader spectrum of substances with greater reliability makes them superior, as they aren't easily circumvented like some urine tests can be, leading to more trustable results.

While urine tests provide results for recent drug use, hair follicle tests surpass them by covering a longer period, thereby offering a more complete picture.
This makes hair testing a more dependable choice for employers and professionals needing to ensure thoroughness in their drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

In Donalsonville, GA, hair follicle testing is uniquely capable of identifying drug use over extended periods, sometimes as long as 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
